Between Sea and Sky 1
oil on canvas / 20" x 30" x 1"
This painting is one of a series that investigates the structures we create to project ourselves into the natural world and their intersection with the surrounding environment. The structures explored are uniquely human: those primarily created to enable entertainment and aesthetic appreciation of nature. The work is motivated by several questions. Can we appreciate nature enough to protect it if we have never experienced it? Is some level of environmental damage acceptable if it creates this appreciation? Or, should we be content to just “know that it is there,” experiencing nature only through the occasional National Geographic special?
