I am fascinated by the capacity of art to challenge and expand one’s conscious awareness of those personal and political realms of life that are mysterious, ambivalent, unconscious, subterranean, confusing, and unformed. A painting begins with my being triggered by a real or imagined image, current event, or ideological juxtaposition that feels shocking, uncanny, confusing, or in any way interesting. I then simultaneously explore the image or idea through painting it and engaging in some sort of intellectual research, allowing that same invisible force that creates my dreams every night to make its marks on my canvas and my psyche.
