In Birthday Series I attempt to capture specific moments that make up leisure experiences. A glimpse into these moments is meant to reflect the unmet expectations of both the subject and the viewer. With a vibrant palette I construct a surface that suggests depth and realism but upon closer inspection is simply a series of abstract brushstrokes. Just as the viewer is confronted with the idea that each of these brushstrokes makes up the whole painting, so too are they confronted with the knowledge that leisure time is often just a string of the mundane moments I have depicted.
